10 things you never knew about spaghetti

#1. Spaghetti is the most popular pasta in the world! Not only is it easy to cook, it’s also affordable, fast and extremely versatile.

#2. First made in the 12th century, traditional Italian spaghetti used to be half a meter long! Nowadays, spaghetti is most commonly available in 25–30 cm lengths (which is probably a good thing… can you imagine how difficult it would be to eat spaghetti THAT long?).

#3. Spaghetti is the plural form of the Italian word spaghetto, which is a diminutive of spago, meaning “thin string” or “twine”.

#5. The average Italian eats 28kg of pasta per year!

#6. The world’s largest bowl of spaghetti weighed 6,251kg. In an attempt to set a world record, US restaurant Buca di Beppo filled a swimming pool with spaghetti in 2009 and 2010. That’s a lot of pasta…

#7. A lot of spaghetti actually comes from the US, which produces 1.9 million tons of pasta every year (compared to the 2.75 million tons made in Italy). Of course, the best spaghetti is Italian!

#8. Spaghetti existed for thousands of years before anyone ever thought to put tomato sauce on it. Really!

#9. Cooked al dente literally means “to the tooth,” which is the best way to test whether your spaghetti is cooked. The pasta should be a bit firm, still offering some resistance to the tooth, but tender.

#10. We’ve brought the best spaghetti from Italy to Australia! Casa Gusto’s spaghetti are hand-made pasta made from 100% Italian flour, shaped using artisan bronze dies, and open air dried under the sun of the Amalfi Coast in Italy!
